The Hydro Motion Team reveals: the 2025 hydrogen boat

This month was THE boat reveal of TU Delft’s Hydro Motion Team and we are proud battery sponsors there. See below the boat the students designed themselves, which contains the battery.

Their goal?

Winning the Monaco Energy boat challenge 2025 of course! By the way, they already did win in 2019 and 2023.

They switched to hydrogen several years ago (in 2020) to prove that it is a serious sustainable alternative to fossil fuel. To prove this further they did something different last year. Not a fast boat for racing but a boat to sail to England. They proved that a boat driven on hydrogen could not only make short fast trips, but also cross the North Sea. And it did so successfully!

Back to the race this year. Here they are going to prove that a hydrogen-powered boat with high energy density is both a practical and scalable solution for the maritime industry. Through the race, they want to prove this in a powerful way.

Their real goal

Behind winning the race is a real goal, a vision. It’s not only to show what is possible but also to set a new standard in the industry.

Steering towards a sustainable future: As forerunners, they are the fuel for change in this sector. A fully sustainable maritime sector is possible, as the Hydro Motion Team proves every year.

Our part

As a progressive battery supplier, we are constantly engaged in electrification, from the electrification of machines to the establishment of microgrids.

That is why we are proud to contribute to this wonderful initiative.

Our batteries have two functions within the boat:

  • They play a crucial role in starting up the system before the hydrogen is turned on.
  • In addition, the batteries are needed to monitor the new liquid hydrogen system. Because the team is monitoring this system 24/7.

Other projects

In addition to the Hydro Motion Team, TU Delft supports a number of other pioneering initiatives, namely:

Delft Hyperloop:
An innovative transportation system that combines speed and sustainability.

Project MARCH:
An advanced exoskeleton that helps people with spinal cord injuries walk.

Eco-Runner:
the world’s most efficient hydrogen car, designed to travel extremely long distances.

Project OASIS:
A miniature habitat for life on Mars designed by students.
