Off-highway battery packs for the electrification of machinery. Swapable or fixed and in any shape and size you need. Co-creation possible for a perfect fit.
What is an industrial battery?
An industrial battery is a battery used in professional or industrial equipment, systems and installations. Unlike a specific battery technology such as lithium-ion or lead-acid, the term industrial battery describes how and where a battery is used.
What makes these applications different is that the battery often has a clearly defined operational role. A battery may need to power a machine throughout the working day, remain on standby for years as part of a backup system, or function as an integrated part of an electric vehicle or machine.
These different operating profiles place different demands on battery performance. This means there is no single industrial battery that is suitable for every application. The right solution depends on what the battery needs to do, how it will be used and the conditions in which it needs to operate.

Different applications, different battery requirements
How an industrial battery is used determines what is required from it. A battery that powers equipment throughout the working day has a very different operating profile from a battery that spends most of its life on standby. Understanding that operating profile is therefore an important first step in selecting the right battery.
Cyclic and motive applications
In applications such as cleaning machines, material handling equipment and access platforms, batteries are charged and discharged regularly. Cycle life, charging time, available capacity and the power required by the equipment are therefore important factors.
Standby and backup applications
Batteries used in UPS, emergency power and other backup systems may spend long periods on standby. Here, reliable backup power, service life and performance when the battery is called upon are particularly important.
Electrification
When a battery becomes an integrated part of a machine or vehicle, the requirements go beyond capacity alone. Available space, weight, voltage, power demand, communication, charging and integration with the equipment all need to work together.
Energy storage
Industrial energy storage systems have yet another operating profile. Required power and storage capacity depend on how the system will be used, for example for peak shaving, increasing self-consumption or supporting a site with limited grid capacity.
The application therefore comes first. By defining how the battery will be used and what it needs to deliver, the requirements for a suitable industrial battery or battery system become clear.

Standard industrial battery or custom battery system?
Not every industrial application requires a custom battery system. For many applications, a standard industrial battery can provide the required performance and fit directly into existing equipment or installations.
Other applications require a battery to become an integrated part of a machine or system. In these cases, factors such as dimensions, voltage, capacity, power, communication and charging need to match the equipment. A battery pack or system can then be configured or engineered around these requirements.
Intercel supports both. Our portfolio includes standard industrial batteries in different technologies and specifications, as well as battery packs and engineered battery systems for applications that require a more tailored solution.

FAQ
What are industrial batteries?
Industrial batteries are batteries used in professional equipment, machines, backup systems and other industrial applications. The term does not refer to one specific battery technology. Industrial batteries can use different technologies and are selected based on the requirements and operating profile of the application.
What is the difference between an industrial battery and a regular battery?
The main difference is the application for which the battery is designed and selected. Industrial batteries often need to meet specific requirements for factors such as cycle life, service life, power, charging, reliability, operating conditions or system integration. Which factors matter most depends on how the battery is used.
What are industrial batteries used for?
Industrial batteries are used in applications ranging from cleaning machines, material handling equipment and access platforms to UPS systems, emergency power, telecom, electric machinery and energy storage. Each of these applications places different demands on the battery.
Are lithium batteries used for industrial applications?
Yes. Lithium batteries, including LiFePO4 batteries, are used in many industrial applications. However, lithium is one of several battery technologies available for industrial use. The appropriate technology depends on the technical and operational requirements of the application.
How long do industrial batteries last?
There is no single lifespan for an industrial battery. Service life depends on factors such as battery technology, usage profile, depth of discharge, charging, temperature and operating conditions. A battery used cyclically every day therefore has a very different usage profile from a battery designed for long-term standby operation.
Do industrial batteries require special chargers?
The charger must be compatible with the battery technology, voltage, capacity and charging requirements. In industrial applications, the charging strategy can also affect availability, performance and battery life. Intercel supplies batteries and charging solutions for professional applications.
Can an industrial battery be customised for a machine or application?
Yes. When a standard battery does not meet the requirements of the equipment, a battery pack or system can be configured or engineered around the application. Requirements can include dimensions, voltage, capacity, power, communication, charging and integration with the machine.
